Right -- like Studio to Go!, which includes the GPL firmware for 
MidiSport 1x1 and 2x2, and also includes the firmware extractor, but 
cannot include the extractable firmware.

Studio to Go! does allow you to provide the original firmware on a 
pendrive or even on a Windows partition, or of course you can add it to 
an installed version.  So using the 4x4 and 8x8 is still practical, but 
it's not so simple.
