Right, that would explain why you are having difficulties. You need to do some 
reading. Start here:

Unfortunately alsaconf doesn't always do the job, which means you may have to 
go and edit the configuration file /etc/alsa/modutils/1.0 (probably) by 
'hand' that is, using a text editor. It's not particularly difficult, but you 
do need to read the available documentation first.

Then read these, in fact you should apt-get the first one from the debian 
archives.
