This immediately made me think "I bet he's using a 64-bit machine", and 
tracking back through the thread I see that that's true.

Rosegarden has had various problems on 64-bit hardware.  In the version 
you have, synchronising MIDI devices between sequencer and GUI 
processes was failing because someone had used different sizes of int 
on opposite sides of a comms protocol.  That's fixed now, but we still 
have reports of crashes when playing/recording MIDI:

These things are proving tricky to track down, because none of the 
developers has any access to 64-bit hardware at the moment.
