More precisely:  Why doesn't KDE just exec "alsactl store" to save its
settings, rather than its own mysterious KDE-specific method?

IMHO this illustrates a key difference in the Gnome/KDE philosophy where
Gnome is clearly superior.  When confronted with a problem like saving
mixer settings the KDE people seem to go for whatever is easiest to get
working, while the Gnome people will wait for a *correct* solution, even
if it means KDE gets $FOO feature before them.

Any software engineer worth their salt will tell you that the easiest
cheapest solution is almost always WRONG.
