But both also require firmware which is not free, has to be installed
on every machine where you want to use the keyboard and it has to be
extracted using a custom tool from some file which you only can unpack
using a Windows machine or Wine. 

Although this works it's not worth the hassle IMO when there are
keyboards that really work plug and play with standard drivers as is
the whole idea of USB. Better buy another keyboard.
