The demudi kernel should work ok. 
But I use a vanilla 2.6.12 + realtime preempt
http://people.redhat.com/mingo/realtime-preempt/  and
Pam with rlimits support from http://www.steamballoon.com/wiki/Rlimits
for my ubuntu (debian based) box. It performs very well.
