Do you notice USB2 stalling while doing things like
rsync?

USB1 stalls like crazy while USB2 is better but does
stall. On my system USB HHDs just aren't usable.
That's the reason I want to switch to firewire.

If we can work directly from the firewire disks then
all the better.
