I did some quick tests using hdparm against a combo firewire/usb external drive a few weeks ago. USB2 came in at 20.77 MB/sec while plain old firewire posted 20.43 MB/sec. I suspect the drive itself and it's interface with the external wire is the limiting factor. Tracey
