I googled some more, and used apt-cache search, and the problem with
both pysol and pydance turned out to be that I had libsdl1.2debian-oss
instead of libsdl1.2debian-alsa. So now I can run both of them with
no errors, and pydance plays the sounds.

But although pysol is set to use sound, and isn't giving me any
errors, I can't hear any sounds. This one is probably a real mixer
problem.

Attached is my amixer output -- what do I need to change to hear the
cards?
