i tried xcdroast again with that kernel, logged in as root. no go.
my drive is actually not the same - GSA-4080N - don't know what the
difference is.

what's your system? mine's an acer 4002WLMi - Pentium-M @ 1.6GHz, 1Gb
RAM.
