And to complete the circle: an obvious choice of "ipc-trick" would be just to 
use the same OSC-based communications as used for DSSI plugin GUIs (trivial 
to implement using Steve Harris's liblo library).  Thus enabling DSSI hosts 
to use them for free, and anything else to use them for fairly cheap.

Nice idea for a little project for anyone with a few hours to spare.
