Something I miss (maybe it exists?) is a kind of "jack_lsc" which
lists current connections the way, aconnect does for midi ports. Any
takers?

I think, to enable spdif you might indeed need to resort to an
asoundrc. But this might be worth a quick try:

$ jackd -d alsa -d spdif
