It makes a snapshot of your current configuration, settings, tracks, 
etc.  This is especially helpful if you want to try out several 
different ways of mixing things, with different automation, effects, 
etc.  You can switch back and forth between snapshots to try things out 
without having to keep re-arranging settings.

I usually make a snapshot each time I add a new track or even a new 
segment to a track.  This way if I lose something from a crash or 
royally f*** something up, I can rollback to a previous snapshot.
