I remembered, that Tim didn't compile ALSA as modules (for whatever
reason, I compile *everything* as modules), but into the kernel.
Looking up his .config again, I found: 

# CONFIG_SND_PCM_OSS is not set

So he built a kernel without support for ALSA's OSS-PCMs (/dev/dspX).
This probably is the reason for them not working.
