I wouldn't recommend using a non-mandrake kernel on a mandrake system...
we have lots of necessary patches in there.  Was there a problem with
the multimedia kernel from 9.2?

Do you have /tmp mounted in ram?
If not, add this to /etc/fstab and reboot:
none /tmp/jack tmpfs defaults 0 0
