Direct ALSA hardware device does not typically support mixing audio from two 
applications.
In the past there was an ALSA plug device named dmix which would mix multiple 
applications together, but I do not know if most distributions still configure 
that.

The typical way for many years would be to use a sound server such as 
PulseAudio or in the last few years Pipewire.
Does your distribution not setup Pipewire by default?
