Thanks again for all the suggestions and info. It seems laptops (in particular)
have become *far* more complicated in a very short time :(
I'll work through the suggestions and report on what (if anything) helps.
Incidentally, mate-system-monitor shows fairly long periods of just over 40% on
one core, switching between cores from time to time. All the others are running
between 5% and 10%.
