Yes, peertube is a worthy alternative, although sometimes it's a hit and
miss. Some of my content has disappeared when the instance it was hosted
on, stopped operating without notice. Choose your instance well ;)

However, peertube does not solve the problem of accessing existing YT
content, some of which is actually good and worth your while. If you'd
rather stream than download, you can still do so with invidious
(https://github.com/iv-org/invidious), for instance (there are other
althernatives). You get ad-less, JS-less, experience that doesn't track
you. There's a list of running instances:

And there is also an equivalent Android app called NewPipe (and probably
others) that serves the purpose fairly well.
