I did run three Presonus Firepod 10 cards simultaneously some years ago. Worked just fine, You could search for another firestudio live second hand. Firewire stuff tends to be quite cheap nowdays.

Thank you for your feeback both of you.
After fiddling even more around in the user manual I found out that the
Presonus FireStudio Project interface doesn't even have ADAT, so my
problem sort-of went away on its own (replaced by a different one
though; how to get extra channels).
