Coincidentally I just saw an article on LWN which reported that CUPS is moving toward using IPP standardized protocol to print to network connected printers, rather than model specific drivers: https://lwn.net/Articles/857502/ I have not yet tried some of the suggestions there, but it is on my list of things for this week. From what I can tell the graphical configuration tools make using IPP much more difficult than it should be (at least with the tools available on current Fedora).
