Coincidentally I just saw an article on LWN which reported that CUPS is
moving toward using IPP standardized protocol to print to network
connected printers, rather than model specific drivers:

I have not yet tried some of the suggestions there, but it is on my list
of things for this week.  From what I can tell the graphical configuration
tools make using IPP much more difficult than it should be (at least with
the tools available on current Fedora).  Just passing this on, perhaps you
can find some time to look into it before I have a chance to verify and
write down specifics.
