Thank you again. I'll try that, but I've found that jack_capture has a
--recording-time Additional argument and says that it 'can connect to
any input or output jack port'. I saw it mentioned at

https://jackaudio.org/applications/

but the link didn't take me anywhere useful, so I looked elsewhere eventually.

https://github.com/kmatheussen/jack_capture

is a better source.

You'll understand I'd rather use jack if possible. :)
