The last two lines should probably refer to zita-mu1:mon_out1.L and R.
The sel_out ports are before the volume controls, they are meant for e.g.
a spectrum analyser.

Thank you all for the many different ways to do things!

I added this to my mplayer config file

ao=jack:port=zita-mu1,jack,alsa

Mplayer connected to zita's in_1.l and .r without asking questions.
