Rémi Denis-Courmont, vlc developer, has replied: "It is the Internet search engine giving wrong results." My spin on it is that it reacts on metadata entered int he file such as track title, author, etc... I use vlc regularly on the music I create and I never had any images added, and I never add any metadata. Linux Mint 18 seems to be locked at 2.2.2.
