ok, that's what I get for guessing at the needed lib name.

After I posted I went to synaptic and saw the tools that were now missing, reinstalled a bunch and that got me going again.

zita-del still works as well, but, if I need to recompile now I know the right thing to install.

You need to install libjack-jack2-dev instead. This is for JACK 2 and will replace libjack0 (which probably de-installed your JACK 2 package).
