Some time ago I was using an old Pentium IV PC (512 RAM) with Musix 3.x (Debian
7) and it would worked quite well considering its low specifications. I used it
mainly for recording, editing, mixing, looper, guitar FX, programming...

I also used a P4, but with more memory. I started with 1G which was enough to record and mix etc. I did find that expanding to 2G(2.5 actually) made a difference in what plugins (and how many) I could play with. The general limitation was with the OS not audio. Turning the HT off was the difference between the very rare xrun with jack at 64/2 to no xruns even at 16/2 (ice1712).
