In pracice decent AD converts should be good at locking onto clocks, a couple of years ago I sent a tarball of the linux kernel saved as a redbook audio file over SPDIF (played on a cheap CD player) on a very long, out of spec coax cable to my hammerfall (as a test to make sure the cabling was OK) and it came through bit perfect. - Steve
