For any MIDI control surface, using MCP in Ardour if the surface
supports 
it, will give the better experience than generic midi will.

I should add that if you are using a BCF2000 you may find this useful:
http://www.ovenwerks.net/software/mcpdisp.html I put it right at the bottom of the screen above the controller.
