IF you have limited time Gentoo isn't the best idea. You don't have to babysit 
it while it's building, but it's still not time efficient.

I switched from Gentoo to Debian unstable a while back. It's probably the
most cutting edge option. If you want to get up to speed really fast, install 
DeMuDi. It's debian based. Somewhat behind the curve... probably about where 
most commercial distros current release is, and it's a snap to go full on 
Debian if you choose to later.
