What distro are you on? I'm on Arch and use the carla-git AUR package,
which compiles fine here. The compilation commands are straightforward,
as you can see here:

https://aur.archlinux.org/cgit/aur.git/tree/PKGBUILD?h=carla-git

But then Arch always has the latest dependencies. If you're on a
debian-based distro, you can try the KXStudio package repos:

http://kxstudio.linuxaudio.org/Repositories
