Pretty much, it depends on the driver quality and card quality, generally the 
cards are capable of it though.

an sb-live would not be a problem. There was a bug in alsa earlier that 
prevented you to go below 512x2 in duplex (though only playback is needed in 
this configuration so it's a non issue, good to know though), that should be 
fixed by now. 
512x2 is perfectly usable for me though..
