Don't know about others, but Rosegarden gives you a choice of all the timers it
can find.
MusE tries first RTC and if that doesn't work it uses ALSA. It should be noted that ALSA can internally be setup to use RTC or HPET as well as system timer, and maybe other timers.
I won't go in to how that would effect performance either way though.
