Get thee to the ProSoundWeb forums and read Harvey Gerst's
many many posts on related topics. Harvey is a great engineer with decades of
experience who runs a "bottom-feeder" studio and has a knack for finding
the stuff worth having at the low end of the price range.

mic choice, placement, etc.  You're bound to learn something.
