Yes, using concrete sounds and editing them is often better and easier then synthesizing... (Just googled on this, I remembered correctly:) "The T-Rex dinosaur sounds in the film [Jurassic Park] were developed from a combination of elephants, alligators, penguins, tigers and dogs."
