try putting this to ~/.asoundrc

spdif_cap {
        type plug
        ttable.0.8 1
        ttable.1.9 1
        slave.pcm {
                type hw
                card 0
                device 0
        }
}

This assumes Audiophile 2496 is card 0

Then try:

ecasound -i alsa,spdif_cap -o alsa,plughw:0

or -o test.wav, but with the former you can monitor your spdif from the
analog outputs (of course you can do the same with envy24control and
setting the hw outs to spdif, from the patchbay/router)
