This file is very interesting... and I never noticed it :-/
My problem is quite different and excuse me if I jump in here...
I have an staudio DSP2000 C-Port and for audio all is OK (I haven't tried
spdif yet, but I don't need it). The card has 3 MIDI ports: 2 OUTs and 1
IN, but I can't get MIDI IN to work :-( 
MIDI OUT works ok (at least MIDI OUT 1) - I think alsa get confused by the
2 OUTS, because with aconnect I see 2 INs too!
Maybe that file can be the solution? Who is creating it? It can be edited?
There is documentation about it?
Too many questions ;-)
