Check with cdrecord -scanbus to be sure your  scsi cd devices.

Read man cdrecord.  Examples at the end will help you.

Check your CD writer maximum write speed.  If you are having troubles, 
reduce writing speed.
To make a backup to a CD use mkisofs.  Read man mkisofs.  Check examples 
in cdrecord man pages.

To write audio cds try to save just wav files under a directory. 
Cdrecord will remove headers.  See also cdrecord examples.

A slower speed is... slower... but... It works!.
