The fastest, easiest, and most reliable options are:
RedHat with Planet CCRMA apt interface to the rpms - or - Mandrake.
Anything else is a fair bit more work for very little return.

If you chose Mandrake, keep in mind that most sound applications are in the 
'contrib' repositories, like mandrake.redbox.cz/Mandrake/9.1/contrib, so 
you'll have to tell urpmi or rpmdrake to look there.  There are also some apps 
at plf.zarb.org that cannot be included in Mandrake for legal reasons.

Let me know if you have any problems, as I'm starting to get things ready for 
Mandrake 9.2...
