I'm not a kernel guru, but have some experience....

I ran a 2.4.20 for several months (cannot remember which one). Decent 
performance was only possible with every patch I could find (512M ram on 
Duron 800).

I used a separate physical disk for capturing the audio, and suffered _severe_ 
problems with ext3 (corrupted partitions) which are not related to realtime 
priorities.

I've skipped over this step in favour of.....

I'm currently running 2.6.0_test10 (with Gentoo MM patches). Minimal setup 
(JACK, Ardour, Muse, Fluidsynth * 2) produces no xruns (512M ram, Duron 1.2G)
