At first I was treating this as a malicious invasion but as I've gone through the steps for that I'm more and more sure that the systems are not actually compromised. After some thought, we remembered a discussion about something that tries to dynamically optimize executables for the particular hardware they are running on. Web searches have yielded plenty of information about dynamic optimization or dynamic adaptation but nothing specific to Linux or to a particular product.
