modem connection

Hi,

I am trying to set-up a modem for dialin access to a server. I
followed some instruction I got about setting up mgetty. So now I can
get the system to answer the modem and issue a login prompt. However
it doesn't offer the password prompt after the user enters the
username.

Should the modem be configured for echo back?

Should mgetty be configured as data-only ( I don't want fax)?

Does anyone know what I am missed?
Thanx.
Dp.

=============================
I used mgetty -x 7 ttyS0 and dialed in.

The log looks like this:

======================
/etc/mgetty+sendfax/login.conf has:

AutoPPP/ -     a_ppp   /usr/sbin/pppd auth -chap +pap login debug
port ttyS0
debug 4
# data-only y # this has been set to off and on at various times.
