sendmail virtusertable

i just set up a new mailserver. it hosts two domains, and the users are 
separate and should NOT receive mail destined for the other domain.
so for example i have:
joe@xxxxxxxxx
sam@xxxxxxxxx
i do not want joe@xxxxxxxxx and sam@xxxxxxxxx to work.

so what ive done on my other mail servers is in virtusertable:
joe@xxxxxxxxx		joe
@place.com	error:nouser User Unknown

and this works, and it wont receive mail for sam@xxxxxxxxxx

but it doesnt work on my new mail server. mail is accepted on any 
domain. 
any suggestions?
