ACPI issues in Dell Studio model 1558

Hi,

I just received a new laptop and am having several problems with it
which I believe are related to ACPI, as follows:

1) The fan runs continuously and fairly noisily, without changing when I
max out all four cores by compiling a kernel, or if I just booted from
cold.

2) The contents of /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone*/temp do not change -
one thermal zone always shows '0' and the other always shows '26800'.

3) When I run PowerTop it appears to underestimate both my battery
capacity and my current power use by a factor of roughly 11 - the
battery is shown as 7.8Wh, but in fact it is 85Wh.

E.g.:

4) The backlight setting does not seem to be readable.  At boot Linux
claims that: [Firmware Bug]: ACPI: ACPI brightness control misses _BQC
function.  So I guess that's that one :-)


I've downloaded the latest BIOS from Dell and jumped through all the
hoops needed to install that, but it made no noticeable change.

The CPU in the system is an Intel Core i7 740QM, and most stuff seems to
work fine - it's really just the thermal management that seems
particularly broken.

I'm currently running 2.6.36-rc3, although the issues are much the same
with the stock Debian kernel (though maybe powertop gives different
results there - I haven't checked that on both kernels).


Any guidance in where to look to resolve the issues would be greatly
appreciated.  I haven't provided the full details of dmesg or lspci -v
etc, because I felt they were a bit much to spam a mailing list with,
but I'm happy to do so if that's the right approach :-)

I would also dearly love to be able to control those fans so the system
used as much passive cooling as possible.  From the set points in the
thermal zones it appears to be configured primarily for active cooling,
viz:

So the icing on the cake for me would be if I could shuffle these points
around to put the passive cooling trip point lower and discourage the
fans from starting up at all.  I don't see any way to do that though.
