Hi

...thanks for taking time out to help a newb!

Battery status works fine. I've attached dmesg.

@ Len Brown

I'm using the latest BIOS release from the HP website, which I installed the 2 weeks ago
after buying a new hard drive. (The previous one failed after 2 years I now know due to
heat damage).

However,

**I'm beginning to think though that I have quite simply a badly designed laptop!***

I did some digging on my Win xp to see if it's just a linux problem. Swiftfan could find no control over the fans,
and even the famous Everest Ultimate couldn't find an internal CPU temperature sensor, I think I might just
not have one?
...i.e. same problem on windows as linux, it seems. (Overheating is just as bad on either)

Sorry if anyone on this list works for HP, from my own experience and what I have heard I am greatly unimpressed by
their laptops. By locking users out of changing any but the most trivial settings in the BIOS I am unable to lower the
temperature trigger point for the fans and so correct their complete incompetence. I was clearly mistaken in thinking
them a good brand of laptop.

I called esupport to see if their BIOS could help any but I was advised that the best I could do would be to take my laptop
to a repair centre and get a bigger fan & heat sink installed.

Either that or a new motherboard, so I can get a reasonable BIOS? (Unbelievable to have to do that just for the sake
of simple BIOS settings. For what it's worth I'll complain to HP)

Thanks anyway,
LS
