I'm not sure that it is a great idea to increase the number of owner IDs "just in case", rather than in response to the needs of a specific machine. Increasing the size of this field increases the size of every namespace node in the namespace. Remember, there can be thousands of namespace nodes, so this size increase may not be trivial. Also, the existing namespace node has been optimized for alignment and size such that increasing the size by 8 bits probably increases it by 32 bits as far as the memory manager is concerned (at least on some operating systems.) Our feeling (the ACPICA team) has been that the existing 8-bit owner ID is sufficient for current machines; If and when this becomes truly insufficient, we are prepared to go to a linked list model to track namespace nodes owned by a particular table or control method.
