While awaiting a response from Jonathan, here is a way to recover the
old functionality.
Under Ubuntu 12.04, the last kernel_image that worked under 11.10 can
be installed.
Also install the correponding linux-headers packages, so that you can compile.
Compile and use the dgcmodem package under the old kernel, until
Jonathan has a fix.

There is a more general issue of upgrading.  It is best to have /home/
in its own partition.
Then when you do an upgrade, choose the non-automatic mode and retain
your old /home/ folder with all your settings retained.
