With an external modem of this kind (it is an RS-232, not an USB), you do not need any special software or work. You just connect the modem to the computer and to the telephone socket, and do not forget to power it up before using it.

If you know how to use wvdial, then wvdialconf will find it, almost certainly as /dev/ttyS0 (or ttyS1 , ...)

If you are using kppp or anything like that, use the modem configuration menu to set the device as ttyS0

and connect

You simply do NOT need anything like slmodem.
