Jim, http://packages.ubuntu.com/natty/sl-modem-daemon provides the slmodemd helper utility which will work with the already onboard driver, snd-intel8x0m. After installation and reboot, the modem should be activated. $ sudo wvdialconf should report finding the modem, writing /etc/wvdial.conf Edit with: $ sudo gedit /etc/wvdial.conf putting in your personal info and adding a line Carrier Check = no An updated scanModem would have provided this information.
