Brian,

You are indeed correct.  Something like this happened to me a while
ago and Marv was very kind to provide a precompiled martian_modem that
was copied over to /usr/sbin/ , ran depmod -a in your case it would be
sudo -depmod -a and then martian modem would work.  I don't have
experience with a new package that exists for Ubuntu/Debian distros
called maritan-modem-src

http://packages.ubuntu.com/da/lucid/martian-modem-source

don't know for sure if the have a working martian_dev.ko

are there any success stories with this new package, and if so does it
make a good working driver for 64 bit Ubuntu
