Derek,

You have set autoloading of martian modem via rc.local script.  Then
if this was working correctly, you should just do a
$ sudo wvdial
but before check to see that the port exists, i.e, output of
$ sudo ls /dev/ttySM0

don't do this:

derek@derek-desktop:~$ sudo martian_modem
martian: error: open: Device or resource busy
martian: info: martian is already running.

instead just do:
derek@derek-desktop:~$ sudo wvdial
--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60
--> Cannot open /dev/ttySM0: No such file or directory

if this fails let us know.
