RE:  ZyXEL Omni56K USB Lite
Check in this USB modem is detected by
$ sudo wvdialconf

If not boot without the modem attached.
In a console:
$ sudo tail -f /var/log/messages &
Attach the USB modem.  Copy us the output messages.

If there is Vendor & Product info displayed
we may be able to specify something like:
$ sudo modprobe usbserial vendor=0x15eb product=0x0001

Also the modem component of
$ lsusb
will be usefull
